CHARLOTTE, N.C. , July 27, 2010 — Aetna (NYSE:AET) and Novant Health announced a new agreement has been reached for the health system's continued participation in the Aetna network. The multi-year agreement will enable Novant Health-affiliated physicians and facilities currently participating with Aetna to continue their participation uninterrupted.
"We're very pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement that enables our members to continue accessing Novant facilities and physicians on an in-network basis," said Mark Schmidt, president of Aetna's North Carolina and South Carolina markets. "The negotiation process, while lengthy, was a necessary one. Aetna is committed to improving the quality of health care and containing rising costs for our members and plan sponsors in the Carolinas. Working with Novant, we've constructed a solid foundation that we can both build on as we go forward." Aetna provides health benefits to more than 300,000 members in North and South Carolina. Those members have access to networks including 163 hospitals and 40,742 contracted primary care and specialist physicians.
